Petra Olschowski was born on 29 June 1965 in Stuttgart. After her A-levels she initially decided on an apprenticeship as a retail saleswoman for the art trade. In 1986, she followed this with a degree in history of art and German at the University of Stuttgart. From 1996 to 2002, following a traineeship, she worked as an editor for the Stuttgarter Zeitung newspaper, where she initially worked on the sports section, then in domestic politics and ultimately on the features section.

In 2002 she moved to take on the role of Managing Director at the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg GmbH (Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation), where she developed cross-sector funding programmes. From 2010 onwards she was the first woman to be head of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart.
